Lot description
"Man in Robe", is color silkscreen print, from The Giants of Contemporary Chinese Art portfolio, loose as issued and in perfect condition.

Zeng Fanzhi is arguably the most important Chinese Contemporary artist working today, internationally sought-after for his figural paintings and works on paper depicting Chinese men and women of the 1990s. His most coveted works belong to his so-called 'Mask' series of portraits, that includes this print, where Zeng covers the faces of his figures in white, literally masking their features, leaving mouths and large intense eyes, as seen here, to communicate the psyche and emotional state of his figures. The man's physical form is further concealed from the viewer in the hooded red robe, a color the artist admittedly employs in his works to refer to Communist China. This print is in pristine condition and has never been framed.

The artist has only published a handful of color silkscreen prints, and this was one of two images that the artist included in the important "The Giants of Contemporary Chinese Art" portfolio, published in 2005 at an edition of only 99. In May 2008, the artist set a milestone with his painting, "Mask Series 1996 No. 6", that sold for $9.7 million at auction. His figural and abstract work has been in many Museum exhibitions, including the First Triennial of Chinese Arts at Guangzhou Art Museum, China, at the Bonn Kunstmuseum in Germany and at Pierre Cardin in Paris amongst many others. He recently had a major solo exhibition at Gagosian Gallery-Hong Kong, September-November 2011.
