Lot description
Sculpted from the malleable FRP material, 'Becoming a Book' demonstrates Yi Hwan-Kwon's expertise in manipulating conventions. Here, Hwan-Kwon's work can be read as both a sculpture and a flat image from any angle. Existing in a supplementary dimension where two and three dimensions meet, the work acts similarly to the images reflected on a film screen.

Calling his work “sculptures of a visual era”, Yi Hwan-Kwon (b.1974) bends, contorts, and blurs his FRP sculptures to create distorted visions of familiar figures. Based on films he enjoyed in his youth, Hwan-Kwon’s work acts as an altered representation of his past experiences. Born in Seoul, Korea, Hwan-Kwon earned his BFA in 2001 and MFA in 2004 from the Environmental Sculpture College of Fine Art, Kyungwon University, Korea. His work has been exhibited at major museums and galleries throughout the world, including recent solo shows at Edwin’s Gallery and Nus Museum, Singapore (2009); Hong Kong Art Center, Hong Kong, China (2009); Posco Art Museum, Pohang, Korea (2007); and Galerie Anders, Dusseldorf, Germany (2007).
