"Orectic Hotel No. 54" (2003) is a stunning color photograph by Chinese Contemporary artist Yang Yong (China, b. 1975) that depicts a beautiful young Chinese woman who reclines in a bathtub of a hotel room at night, wearing a tight-fitted short dress and high-heels, with her hair and make up done. She gazes directly at the viewer, with a look of exhaustion as well as seduction, evoking a sense of surreal isolation. This work belongs to an ongoing photographic series by Yong, where the subjects are beautiful women who make their living through prostitution. Yang is famous for the ability to communicate the sitter's unspoken desires, fears, and their place in contemporary urban life. Yang Yong (B. 1975) studied painting before becoming world renowned for photography. The artist graduated from the Sichuan Art Institute, and has had solo exhibitions at select international venues including the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2010) and group exhibitions at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, The Himalayas Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Haikou, Japan, and The 2003 Venice Biennale Chinese Pavilion. The artist currently lives and works in Shenzhen, China.
