Lot description
Unabashedly dynamic, celebratory and ironic, exciting emerging Chinese artist, Yang Xiaoxiang (Chinese, b. 1976) is known for large-scale figurative oil paintings of China's rural country folk amidst their every-day activities, often featuring children in play and conventional social interactions among the community. "Butterflies" (2011) is a surreal scene of wonderment as both adults and children alike share a moment of awe, as they all admire the flutter of colorful butterflies that surrounds them. Figures in the distance add to the narrative and bring a sense of dynamism, as they chase the butterflies and raise their hands in delight. This energy and movement is underscored again by Yang's gestural and colorful brushwork that defines his oeuvre. The artist is known for works like "Butterflies" that combine childhood fantasy with scene from nature, creating new narratives based on traditional Chinese figure paintings and literature. This work measures 55.12 x 63 inches and is in excellent condition.

Yang Xiaoxiang received his degrees from Guizhou University in 2000. The artist is a member of the Guizhou Province Artists Association and has exhibited throughout China, and has won several awards including the 2000 Excellence Award in the Guizhou "Cantata" exhibition, the 2001 Excellence Award in the Guizhou Province Beijing Exhibition, and the 2003 Gold Medal award in the Guizhou Province third Youth Art Exhibition.
