Lot description
Easily mistaken for a color photograph, "Who?" (2012) is actually an incredible, large-scale realist oil painting by rising star, emerging Chinese Contemporary artist Yang Peng. This stunning work encapsulates a forceful yet ironic conceptual moment in time, a powerful visual metaphor that deals with the censorship of the Chinese public by its government. Yang creates five vertical tiers in this composition, each depicting a very expressive portrait of the same man. Anonymous hands reach out from behind to tightly cover the eyes of each portrait, succeeding in hiding the man's identity from public view. In turn, each face struggles against this censorship of self. Yang is famous for his works such as "Who?" that unabashedly speak out against the widespread censorship of individual political, cultural, and religious beliefs in China. This work is unframed and measure 74.80 x 47.25 inches (190 x 120 cm) and is in excellent condition.
