Lot description
Wim Wenders (b. 1945, Düsseldorf) is an internationally renowned filmmaker, photographer and artist. In the 1970s, Wenders became a cult figure and leading director of New German Cinema with his first films, “Summer in the City,” and “The Goalkeepers Fear of the Penalty,” which exhibited his unique cinematic style. Among Wenders’ most well known and highly acclaimed films are “Buena Vista Social Club” and “The Soul of Man,” both of which document genres of music.

Wenders began using photography as an art medium in its own right in 1983, while he was scouting locations to film his 1984 movie, “Paris, Texas.” He continued to take photographs during his many trips to cities and small towns around the world, highlighting various regions in Brazil, Japan, Australia, Armenia, and the U.S., among others. Haunch of Venison Gallery in London held a retrospective exhibition of Wenders’ photographs in April and May of 2011.

Wenders describes his photographic work and process: “When you travel a lot, and when you love to just wander around and get lost, you can end up in the strangest spots. I have a huge attraction to places. Already when I look at a map, the names of mountains, villages, rivers, lakes or landscape formations excite me, as long as I don't know them and have never been there ... I seem to have sharpened my sense of place for things that are out of place. Everybody turns right, because that's where it's interesting, I turn left where there is nothing! And sure enough, I soon stand in front of my sort of place. I don't know, it must be some sort of inbuilt radar that often directs me to places that are strangely quiet, or quietly strange.”
