American Photographer William Wegman (b. 1943) is best known for his portrayals of dogs, primarily his own Weimaraners, dressed in costume and placed in human scenarios. Initially, Wegman sought to pursue a career as a painter, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Massachusetts College of Art in 1965 and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1967. While teaching at California State University in Long Beach, Wegman adopted his first Weimaraner, who he named after the artist Man Ray, which became the artist’s iconic inspiration. His photos have appeared in books, advertisements, and films, as well as on television programs such as Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live. In 2006, a major retrospective of Wegman’s work traveled around the country to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Norton Museum of Art and the Addison Gallery.
