Lot description
RARELY SEEN Work on Paper by American painter William L. Hawkins (1895-1990).

Hawkins is recognized for his dynamic Self-Taught Folk Art style inspired by the natural and built environments surrounding him. After relocating to Columbus, Ohio in 1916, the artist began to expand his artistic style, and the work generated during the later part of his life is characterized by immense compositional complexity and pictorial unity, with each image offering separate Art Brut visions of Bible Stories, American ‘icons’, news and historical events and or well-known works of art.

During the last twelve years of his life, Hawkins created a small yet pivotal selection of drawings to complement his large array of painted works. Each of these drawings are distinguished by Hawkins’ clarity of vision, imaginative pictorial design and unique sense of humor.
