William Kentridge was the first artist to visit the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies, for a residency back in 2003. At the time the print shop (which is a professional shop that educates the MFA printmakers at Columbia University) challenged its' students to work with the artist and an invited masterprinter to bring this series to fruition. Part of production resolved as a set of nine typewriter etchings, with eight of them (roman numerals, II - VIII) forming a set. These prints rarely come up as the complete set - thus one is left to collect them as individuals. These look fantastic as a grouping of 2 or 3 running alongside of each other and the images become anthropomorphized when compared to each other.

Kentridge is the best contemporary artist working today who is a major talent in all things drawn. He is one of the most cinematic and theatrical of artists moving out of the studio often to design sets for the opera (Shostakovich's, The Nose, The Metropolitan Opera, NYC) and his artist videos are sublime and moving. His printmaking forays are immense, one of the few contemporary artists to love the medium and prove it by his output. His artistic commitment to printmaking is so earnest that he has his own dedicated print shop in South Africa and also spreads his love of the medium by collaborating with other talented shops internationally.

In excellent condition, to see other typewriter etchings on offer this week, please search Kentridge within our auctions site.

Other edition numbers of prints of this Kentridge typewriter series are in the following museum collections; Museum of Modern Art - NYC, Boston Museum of Fine Arts - Boston and the New York Public Library, NYC among others.
