Arthur Felig, known professionally as Weegee (1899 - 1968), so named for the phonetic rendering of the psychic board game Ouija, was New York’s foremost freelance crime and tabloid photographer of the mid 20th Century. Weegee claimed to have psychic powers that allowed him to predict crimes before they happened. Weegee would sleep fully clothed with a police radio switched on at his bedside. His camera, typewriter, and even the equipment of a complete darkroom were stowed in the trunk of his car, allowing him to bring photographs and a finished story to his editors with uncanny speed. His best known photographs are those documenting street life in New York City with a candid and unflinching vision. Weegee participated in several museum exhibitions including a photography show at the Museum of Modern Art in 1943, and had a celebrated book of photographs, ‘Naked City’, published in 1945. Weegee’s works were featured at a 2006 exhibition ‘Unknown Weegee’ at the International Center of Photography.
