Wang Dajun (b.1958) is a contemporary Chinese artist whose often photographic, yet surreal, paintings demonstrates a mastery of technique, a sense of his own place in history and culture, and often a fair amount humor.
This triptych from Wang Dajun's "Images of Children" consists of three stretched canvases each measuring 70.8" x 43.3"

Here the artist is examining society by juxtaposing the past and the present. The children from the Cultural Revolution and those of today are often only one generation apart, but are living in two radically different worlds. The era, with its ideology and the disastrous consequences that followed, is confronted with the children of today who have no ideology at all but that of the Money and God.

In the artist's words, "Children are the most easily controlled by the State and, through all the imagery of the Cultural Revolution, we can see how the crazy and irrational ideology of that time influenced the whole population: Red Guards, little red soldiers championing the revolutionary route of Chairman Mao, ... In those years of blood and fire, children became as merciless as the winter wind toward enemies that could be family or friends."

Wang, graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1983 where he also currently teaches. He has exhibited widely in China and internationally, including in Hong Kong, Germany, France, UK, and Indonesia, including a recent solo show in Singapore.
