Lot description

This stunning large-scale color photograph taken in Times Square, New York, is one of the most recent visually saturated and compositionally accomplished images by famed Contemporary Indian artist Vivek Vilasini (Indian, 1964), who has become critically acclaimed for his incredibly intense, highly ironic works that employ and conflate Indian traditional imagery with American and British Pop Art Culture. Two traditional male warriors confront one another, dressed in full regalia from days past seem to fit right into the surreal glare and glitz of New York's Time Square, the comments of one to the other captured in the yellow square at top, a nod to American Pop Art and artists such as Roy Lichtenstein. Vilasini's in-depth knowledge of art history makes grounds his works yet allows the irony and fantastic social commentary and narrative of each to resonate.

Focusing on incredibly poignant photography and multimedia works, contemporary artist Vivek Vilasini (B. 1969) closely investigates the effects of existing social structures and cultural identities upon individuals in the grand scheme of rapidly developing globalization and ever-changing ideologies. Using an array of mediums such as wood, steel, dust, video, photography, and painting, his works portray controversial narratives, embellished with a hint of humor, and comprised in a language all his own. The artist has exhibited internationally, with shows held at Indigo Blue Art (Singapore), The Guild (New York, NY), Aicon Gallery (London, UK), and Sharjah Art Museum (Sharjah, UAE), among others.
