Lot description
Proceeds from the sale of this work will benefit CHAI MoDERN, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of issues related to identity by supporting established and emerging artists who express their passionate concern for this mission through their artwork.

The Wakhan Journey is a documentary art project by photographers and friends Fabrice Nadjari and Cedric Houin, together known as Varial and Nadjari. Last year, the two embarked on a journey across the mountainous passage between Afghanistan and China known as the Wakhan Corridor, traveling the 300 plus kilometers on foot. Conducted through photos, videos and installations, The Wakhan Project is the photographers’ homage to this remote corridor, its cultures and inhabitants.

For The Wakhan Journey, Varial and Nadjari were awarded the CHAI MoDERN Annual Grant for Artists, which is sponsoring and organizing a show at MILK Gallery in New York from May 18 to May 22, 2012. In addition to MILK’s exhibition of their works, the Impossible Gallery is showing select Polaroids by Varial and Nadjari from their book, Traces of Time, from May 2 to June 2, 2012.

Two photo-essays from The Wakhan Project were recently awarded the 2012 Photo District News Annual Prize. Over the past two months, numerous publications have written about The Wakhan Project, including the New York Times, NPR, Mymodernmet, the BBC, The Impossible Project and Flavorwire.
