Lot description
Deceptively simple, Uta Barth's photographic works question the traditional functions of images and our expectations of them. ‘Ground #33’ is an ektacolor mounted on panel that characterizes her approach to blurring the subject to such an abstracted degree, that it becomes unrecognizable from its original form. In this way, Barth places the focus on what the viewer is trying to perceive, teasing out the familiar from the completely unknown.

Born in 1958 in Berlin, Germany, Uta Barth moved to the United States when she as a teenager. By photographing in ordinary anonymous places, Barth uses what is natural and unstudied to shift attention away from the subject matter, and redirect focus to a consciousness of the processes of perception and the visceral and intellectual pleasures of seeing. She is well-known for experimenting with depth and the framing of her subjects, often blurring the photographs, which lack activity in the foreground, to create an image that is familiar, yet offbeat. She received her B.A. from the University of California, Davis in 1982, and her M.F.A. in 1985 from the University of California, Los Angeles. Barth was a recipient in 2004 of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and has exhibited internationally at the Tate Modern, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Whitney Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and various museums and galleries throughout Tokyo, Amsterdam and Stockholm.
