"Kusama Rooftop Performance, No 10" (c.1970) is a controversial performance piece that examines the heyday of the 1970's rise of feminist and anti war art era, by Tokyo born Ushio Shinohara, (b. 1932) often referred to as "Guy-chan." Photographer Ushio Shinohara was born into painting, learning from his mother a Japanese painter, Joshi Bijutu Daigaku who instilled in him a love of Impressionist painting. Ushio, however left painting at the Tokyo Art University for other, more avant-garde forms of visual expression through media like photography and installation, initiating the rebellious "junk art" installations and helping to begin the Neo Dada movement, and has been attributed to inspiring Tokoy's avant-garde movement after the war. Ushio's global awareness of the world culture and surrounding events lead the artist to collaborate with some of the top expressive and conceptual artists who gave voice and vision to the international art world during this era.
