Lot description
Tu Hongtao’s visually dynamic compositions operate as a vehicle for the artist to play out his directorial dreams. Producing surrealist scenes with allusions of reality, Hongtao packs his paintings with erotic, sometimes violent imagery that alludes to pop culture as well as his own personal experiences. This Untitled oil painting features Hongtao’s characteristic subject, a seductively posed female marionette. Taking the corporeal place of man in this scenario, the staged puppet expresses the illusion of the scene and critiques the overwhelming sense of artificiality in the contemporary world. Here the interplay of fantasy and reality creates a theatrical experience that leaves the audience emotionally charged and questioning their own veracity.

Tu Hongtao (B. 1976 China) is one of China's most important young Contemporary artists. Similar to earlier, contemporary Sichuan artists, Tu's work is based on the literal and emotional situation of the individual, focusing on the psyche that lies beneath a superficial surface. His work is influenced by Surrealist artists including Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. The artist has exhibited world-wide at such venues as the Iberia Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing, China), Today Art Museum (Beijing, China), Museum of Contemporary Art (Shanghai, China), and Suzhou Museum (Suzhou, China), among others. He graduated from China Academy of Fine Arts (1999), specializing in oil painting and was the recipient of the Taiwan Lizhongsheng Foundation Excellence Award (1998). The artist currently lives and works in both Chengdu and Beijing, China.
