Lot description
This mint condition screenprint by legendary Indian artist, Thota Vaikuntam (b. 1942) depicts an extravagantly dressed couple in the artist's typical figurative style. Using bold primary colors, Vaikuntam captures the aesthetic and cultural trends and traditions of his subjects, who are often in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh, where he was raised and where he often finds his inspiration. He explained his tendency to use only primary colors, like the way he uses them in this particular work, when he said: "I like using rich primary colours, which give a sense of character and depth to my paintings. Like reds and saffron and even orange, because these are essentially Indian colours. I don't like using colours that are mix of two, because they are not natural, they don't exist in surroundings around us, in our everyday life." - Saffron Art

This print unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity from Marvel Graphic Studio.

Known for his bold use of color and form, Thota Vaikuntam is often inspired by rural areas of India, drawing inspiration from the men and women in his village. He adds a sensual and vibrant element to his figures, infusing dynamic energy in their clothing to contrast with the calm serenity found in their faces. Often exploring villagers in activities such as household chores, temple rituals, and festivals, Vaikuntam captures the essence of the region as well as the range of colors found there. The artist has exhibited at such venues as The Guild Art Gallery (Mumbai, India), Gallery Kufa (London, UK), and Gallery Espace (New Delhi, India), among others.
