This rare and stunning pair of gouache portrait paintings on paper depict an Indian man and Indian woman, each wearing a elegant traditional dress and jewellery, with attention to every detail from hairstyle to their hand gestures of supplication. These visually arresting works represent some of the very best work on paper to-date, by one of the most famous figural painters in Indian Contemporary art, Thota Vaikuntam. Adding to the value of these works is the fact that gouache paintings on paper are very rare by this artist.

Known for his bold use of color and form, Thota Vaikuntam is often inspired by rural areas of India, drawing inspiration from the men and women in his village. He adds a sensual and vibrant element to his figures, infusing dynamic energy in their clothing to contrast with the calm serenity found in their faces. Thota's work has been in solo, group gallery and Museum exhibitions for decades and is the recipient of countless National and International Awards, Gallery, Museum and Fair participation most recently in 2011"'Ethos V: Indian Art Through the Lens of History (1900 to 1980)", Indigo Blue Art, Singapore ; 2010: 'Master’s Corner', organized by Indian Contemporary Art Journal at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and 'Summer Show 2010', Centre of International Modern Art (CIMA), Kolkata; 2006 ‘CIMA Annual 2006’, Centre of International Modern Art (CIMA) in 1991 his work was included in the 7th Triennale, India. The artist lives and works in India.
