Thomas Ruff (b. 1958, Germany) is an internationally renowned photographer who lives and works in Düsseldorf. Ruff studied photography from 1977 to 1985 with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Ruff names Walker Evans, Eugene Atget, Karl Bloßfeld, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston as his main influences. From 2000 to 2005 Ruff taught Photography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorff. During his studies in Düsseldorf, Ruff developed his method of conceptual serial photography. His initial main topic was the interior of German living quarters, with typical features of the 1950s to 1970s. Ruff is known for his oversized, passport photo like portraits, his unmediated shots of commonplace interiors, his evocative nudes borrowed from pornographic websites, and his 'jpeg' series. These series illustrate the artist’s insistence that photographs capture merely “the surface of things.” In 2007, Ruff was the subject of two one-person museum exhibitions at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden and the Sprengel Museum, Hannover, Germany.
