Characteristic of the artist’s early work from the 1980s, Terry Winters’ expressive botanical rendering exists in a realm between abstraction and representation. Demonstrating an abstract-expressionist concern with the painting process, Winters produces a dense landscape of gestural markings. Rendered in earth tones, Winters’ line drawing takes on semblances of hollow, almost decayed, honeysuckles, establishing a sense of reality in this otherwise figurative work. Simultaneously void of life and full of energy, the composition engages visual tensions that relate to our contemporary, fast-paced culture that attempts to assimilate the past, present, and future.
Throughout his career, Terry Winters (b.1949) has maintained a modernist approach to his nature inspired images, developing a distinctive language that merges abstraction, symbolism, and figuration. His abstract paintings, drawings, and prints have evolved to include more contemporary references, including issues concerning the relationship between tradition and technology. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Winters earned a BFA in 1971 from Pratt University. Since his first solo show at Sonnabend Gallery, New York, NY in 1982, Winters’ work has been widely exhibited, with recent solo shows at Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, NY (2012); Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland (2009); Patrick de Brock Gallery, Knokke, Belgium (2008); Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2007); Musée departemental du compagnonnage, Solutré, France (2006); and San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA (2005). He was featured in the inaugural show at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York, NY and continues to be represented by the gallery.
