Considered the Warhol of Japan for his fame and factory-style art production at KaiKai KiKi Co, Takashi Murakami (b. 1962), one of the most significant contemporary artist to emerge from Japan today, works in both fine arts media, such as painting and sculpture, as well as in digital and commercial media, such as a series of Louis Vuitton bags, apparels, and toys. Classically trained in historic ‘Nihon-ga’ style at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (BFA, MFA, and Ph.D), Murakami blends traditional Japanese styles with contemporary pop culture, exploring the boundaries between high and low, conceptual and commercial, and East and West, especially with his trademark usage of anime and manga cartoon figures.

Takashi Murakami, originally coined the term “Superflat”, a post-modern style describing both the aesthetic and conceptual characteristics of the Japanese art today, denying any deep spacial depth. Murakami has branded himself internationally in the art, fashion, and pop world, receiving much critical praise in numerous publications as well and being collected by some of the most prestigious museums and private collections worldwide. Among his extensive exhibitions, some notable examples include a major retrospective which toured from the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art to the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt, Germany as well as the Guggenheim in Bilbao (2008-09). He also has had solo shows at the Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar: "Ego"(2012); Gagosian Gallery, London (2011) and the Palace of Versailles in France (2010).
