Lot description
Lotus Flower Pink and Lotus Flower White are from a broader “Flower” series of prints released in 2010 that includes Murakami’s signature motif of Manga-inspired, cartoonish flowers with smiling faces. The lotus, in Japan as well as other Asian cultures, is often used to represent purity, elegance, beauty, perfection and grace. Offset lithograph, hand signed by the artist. Numbered edition of 300. Published by Kaikai Kiki Co. Ltd, Japan.

Tokyo-born Takashi Murakami initially studied traditional Japanese art forms at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, going on to create his own unique style and philosophy that incorporates aspects of both Japanese and Western tradition, as well as the more current influence of Japanese anime and manga. Murakami has expressed this new aesthetic, known as Superflat, through various mediums including painting, sculpture, and digital media.
Murakami is one of the most significant artists of the younger generation to emerge from Japan. He is considered to be the Japanese Andy Warhol. In synthesizing popular culture and traditional form, Murakami's work has pervaded both high and low culture. He designed a series of handbags for Louis Vuitton a few years ago, but his work has also seen very high prices in the contemporary auctions the past few years.
Murakami's work is exhibited internationally and in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, CA), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo, Japan).
