This stunning color photograph is from famed Indian artist Sunil Gupta's acclaimed autobiographical series “Homelands.” In this series of diptychs, Gupta juxtaposes architectural and figural images of the different cities and countries, namely India, The U.K., U.S., and Canada, all places he has lived. Exploring issues of displacement, comfort, as well as domestic and urban environments, Gupta's Homeland Series of photos are identified by a long, strictly vertical format, of two opposing images that are visually strikingly different, and as such create a sense of emotional tension and drama. These works are not only beautiful, Sunil makes them into a curious narrative that the viewer is free to relate to or interpret as they wish. The images he selects to represent the places and people in his life are magnificent, often harsh, and always unapologetic and stunning. "Nizamuddin, New Delhi/Docklands, London", is one of his most magnificent and powerful photographs from the series and comes to the Sale custom framed, from a Private Collection, NY.

One of the most famous post-Modern Indian artists working today, Sunil Gupta was born in New Delhi, India in 1953. He moved to Montreal when he was a teenager and lived in New York in the mid-1970s. There he studied photography with Philippe Halsman and Lisette Model at the New School for Social Research. In 1983, he received his MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art in London.

Gupta’s photographic work is heavily influenced by his own personal history and that of being a gay artist. In turn, he explores political and social issues of India, often focusing on themes of race, gender and sexuality. Gupta’s photographs have been shown in over 90 solo and group exhibitions worldwide. He also has two published monographs: “Pictures From Here” (2003) and “Wish You Were Here: Memories of a Gay Life” (2008).
