Rooftop (2011) belong to the iconic "Private Space" Series of large-scale, photorealist oil paintings by one of China's top emerging Contemporary artists, Su Zhihan. This ethereal work, depicts a beautiful partially nude Chinese woman sitting atop a roof, far above a forest of leafy green trees below, with a stunning skyline filled with billowing violet clouds and a lighting-storm in the distance. An unknown bright light source shines upon her, spotlighting her stunning facial features and physique. Su paints her figure in blacks and whites, as if her image is sourced from a vintage photograph and collaged into the dynamic colorful night-scape, heightening the surreal narrative of this work. This painting is unframed and in excellent condition.

"Rooftop" belongs to the artist's ongoing and renowned 'Private Space' series of photo-realist oil portraits of young Chinese women that all speak to the desire of the younger generations to breaking cultural taboos and explore the increasingly acceptable practice of pursuing a more open lifestyle and seeking physical and mental pleasure, specifically fulfilling sexual desires. In the "Private Space" series, Su uses only subtle, non-verbal cues and never reverts to graphic nudity to get his message across. Instead, he typically relies on facial features of his women, as well as the gestures of their hands to express emotions and desires.

Su Zhihan is one of the leading young Chinese painters since the 1980's generation, with numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries internationally. Exhibition venues for the artist include The Shangshang Art Museum (Beijing, China), the Royal Castle Museum (Tours, France), and VIP’s International Gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands), among numerous others. The artist lives and works in China.
