Lot description
From the amFAR Photography Portfolio, curated by Jack Pierson. Image size is 11 x 14.75 inches (27.9 x 37.5 cm). Paper size is 16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm).

Stephen Shore (b. 1947) received his first darkroom kit at the age of six and began producing his first color photographs with a 35 mm camera at age nine. Influenced by Walker Evans' "American Photographs," Shore presented his work to Edward Steichen at the MoMA, who purchased three of his works. Ten years later, he had a solo exhibition at the MoMA. He began making cross-country road trips, eventually transitioning to shooting with 8" x 10" colo9r film. He has achieved recognition as a key figure in new color photography, a loosely defined movement whose practitioners have brought serious aesthetic considerations to color photography as an art form. Shore's body of work includes images of everyday subject matter - the back wall of a parking lot, yellow traffic stripes, a tabletop place setting in a restaurant - in sparsely populated areas that convey his formalistic vision of balance and serenity. He currently lives in New York and directs the photography department at Bard College.
