Lot description
Contemporary German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol (b. 1957) creates mixed media pieces and sculptures that primarily focus on the human figure. His work can be understood as a response to the Minimalist and Conceptualist profile of the Hamburg School of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1976 to 1982. Balkenhol’s sculptures are often subtly destabilizing, portraying familiar forms in an unusual or unsettling way. Balkenhol has exhibited widely throughout the world, with recent solo shows at Kunstforum Würth, Turnhout, Belgium (2011); Tomo Koyama Gallery, Kyoto, Japan (2011); Thaddeus Ropac, Paris, France (2010); Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, Germany (2008-2009); and Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany, touring to Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst, Duisburg, Germany and Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria (2006-2007).
