Lot description
This rare hand signed, titled and numbered early color engraving on Arches paper was created by the legendary Stanley Hayter in 1961. The title comes from Greek mythology: Individually the Nereides represented various facets of the sea, from salty brine, to foam, sand, rocky shores, waves and currents. The work is framed and ready to hang - and would look impressive in any seaside home, or to evoke the power, serenity and resonance of the sea.

Nereide is numbered 3 from the small edition of only 50. What makes this particular work even more special is: (1) it is from the very original run: only the first 15 prints in the edition, including this one (#3) were actually created in 1961; numbers 16-25 were printed later in 1968 and 26-50 in 1975 respectively; (2) it was exhibited at an important Hayter print retrospective in 1974 at Tortue Gallery, and bears their distinctive label verso; and (3) It was actually created at the legendary Atelier 17, where Hayter made his greatest print innovations.

Nereide is also fully referenced in the catalogue raisonne of Hayter's prints, accompanied by a full page color reproduction. (Black & Moorhead, Plate 262, pages 242-243). In the foreword to the catalogue that accompanied the Tortue print retrospective that featured Nereide, Bryan Robertson, former director of London's Whitechapel Gallery wrote: "Hayter, working always with maximum flexibility in painting, drawing, engraving and collage, has invented some of the most central and significant images of this century before most of the other artists of his generation. He is an originator, and it is a sign of this artist's vitality and youthfulness that he has never bothered to put on the mantle of elder statesman which he has an indisputable right to wear....."

Stanley W. Hayter as one of the most significant and innovative printmakers of the 20th century, particularly in the field of etching and engraving. He founded the legendary Atelier 17 Studio in Paris, now known as Atelier Contrepoint, which relocated to New York during the war. Artists like Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Dorothy Dehner (wife of renowned sculptor David Smith), Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Yves Tanguy, Marc Chagall and Jacques Lipchitz Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miro, Robert Motherwell and Louise Nevelson, all passed through Hayter's (whom they affectionately called "Bill") studio, and his work has been recognized in museums around the world such as the Tate Gallery in London.
Hayter was associated with the Surrealists in the 1930s and the Abstract Expressionists after his move to New York in 1940. It was during the decade based in New York that he produced some of his greatest prints - like Nereide - having perfected a technique for simultaneous multicolour printing of intaglio and surface inkings from one plate. This revolutionary approach, combined with the counterpoint of line and space, later gave way to more decorative and rhythmic works.

This work is framed and ready to hang. In excellent condition; a bright impression.
