Lot description
As one of his earlier conceptual works, Sol LeWitt uses a sheet of mounted postage stamps in order to explore ideas of seriality through the repetition of imagery. Using the grid layout prescribed by the page of stamps, LeWitt hints at the varied scheme which determines an overall form, transforming the mass reproductions of Thomas Eakins’ ‘The Biglin Brother’s Racing’ into an aesthetic display of sequencing and iteration.

Framed: 13.25 x 13.25 in.

Considered a founder of the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements, American artist Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) was known for his brightly colored sculptures, paintings, installations, and architectural designs which employed geometric forms, abstracted progressions, and visually complex compositions. Gaining notoriety in the late 1960s, LeWitt tested the psychological perception of viewers as well as contemporary notions of visual aesthetics with his vivid works of geometric abstraction and minimalism. The artist received his BFA from Syracuse University and studied at the School of Visual Arts. Since 1965, he has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world, with retrospectives held at the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY).
