Lot description
Alma-Tadema began depicting scenes of Egyptian life in the 1860s, early on in his career. These early works played a major role in establishing the artist as a significant player in European art.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836 – 1912) was a British painter born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands who is best known for his classical academic paintings depicting the excess and decadence of the Roman Empire. Alma-Tadema was one of the most financially successful artists of his time, a fact that is revealing of the zeitgeist of the Victorian era. His works, most of which were elaborate, detailed scenes of luxury and beauty, catered to his audience, both stylistically and in their subject matter.

There was an impetus in the sale of Alma-Tadema's works in the 1970s, and he continues to be seen as one of the most important and celebrated painters of classical subject matter.
