Lot description

A bird's-eye view of a white rose in bloom, whose petals are luminous against the dark background and filled with a mass of miniature vivid red figures is painted here at a large scale of 59 x 59 inches, by one of China's finest Realist painters, Shi Lifeng (China, b. 1968). This work belongs to Shi's seminal new "Utopia" Series of paintings that define a significant new direction in the artist's oeuvre, which for decades was based on an intense black and red color palette and on Chinese Communist, propaganda-based imagery. Now the artist paints narratives that celebrate the growing peace and financial prosperity of new China, decades after the disastrous Cultural Revolution, with flowers acting as metaphor, underscoring the blossoming potential today for the individuals of China, as well as for the country as a whole.

Shi Lifeng is one of the most famous artists of his 1960's generation of 'Chinese Avant Garde' artists. He graduated in 1991 from the Hebei Normal University, Hebei Province, China with a Degree in Painting and has exhibited at top international museums and galleries such as the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art, Yang Gallery (Singapore), and Beijing Contemporary Art Museum (Beijing, China), among others. His works are highly sought-after on the primary and secondary markets, world-wide.
