Lot description

This watercolor, ink, and graphite work on paper entitled 'After Miro' by Sherrie Levine exemplifies the artist's interest in the appropriation of Modern masters. Examining theories surrounding unique styles of modern abstraction, Levine investigates the organic forms Miro was renowned for, with a stark sense of tonality and dynamically moving shapes spread across the composition. Capturing Miro's iconic style of undulating forms on a two dimensional surface, Levine elevates her study of Modern artistic predecessors with this exemplary work on paper.

Having worked in an extensive range of mediums, American conceptual artist Sherrie Levine (B. 1947) is known for her investigation into issues surrounding authorship, authenticity, and originality in art. Often revisiting modern masters such as Stieglitz, Duchamp, Walker Evans, Mondrian , and Matisse (among countless others), Levine chooses artists with radically different styles in order to render them into a uniform format and reducing their imagery into completely reinterpreted forms. She argued that ubiquitous signs defining reality made it impossible to create anything unique or new, and maintained her earlier feminist concerns by only appropriating work from male artists as a way to break down their patriarchal domination of art history. An upcoming retrospective of Levine’s work is to be held in 2012 at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY).
