Lot description
Standing up for what he believes in, Shepard Fairey uses his art and posters to bring awareness to issues concerning America’s political, environmental, and social state. With his windmill image, Fairey calls attention to the green energy mission and the importance of achieving energy independence for America’s future. Viewing wind energy as a key component of the clean energy efforts, Fairey creates an optimistic wind factory scene through spray paint, stencils, and collaged newspaper elements, and features the ‘Power Up America’ symbol in the lower right-hand corner.

Best known for his Barack Obama “Hope” poster of the 2008 presidential election, Shepard Fairey has combined street art and alternative skate culture with the realm of fine art. Prior to the most recent election, Fairey was primarily recognized as the face behind the “Obey Giant” campaign, designed in the late 1980s and early 1990s during Fairey’s time at the Rhode Island School of Design. The movement involved stickering, stenciling, and painting images and slogans throughout the world, that contradictorily stood for something and nothing at once and had an inherent sense of humor based on their existence alone. Fairey’s body of work combines elements of graffiti, Pop Art, business art, and appropriation art, breaking into the commercial realm as a fashion designer and advertising artist for brands such as Pepsi, meanwhile exhibiting works in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Fairey’s works have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the world, notably including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2011); the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, San Diego, CA (2010); and the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, MD (2005).
