Lot description
“The Assembly Hall-Yangjialing” is a stunning color photograph by famous Chinese husband and wife artistic collaborative duo Shao Yinong and Mu Chen that belongs to their internationally acclaimed “Assembly Hall” series of large-scale color-photographs that beautifully document the empty community centers, churches, and auditoriums that were appropriated by the peasant-organized Red Army for public meetings during China's Cultural Revolution throughout the country. This photograph is edition 1 of 8, measures 34.75 x 37.25 inches and is in perfect condition.

Here, traces of this architectural space's former use still remains, in the repeated use of the color red, as well as in the flags, banners, and portraits of Red Army leaders at center including Mao. The bright, natural light that floods the empty space here symbolizes enlightenment and point towards a brighter future for China. Shao Yinong and Mu Chen traveled to twenty-three different provinces in China to produce this Series and the beautifully composed spaces such as emphasize the architectural structures, either obsolete or transformed for a new use, evoke a tension between the tumultuously political past and the quickly changing future. The two have attracted critical attention for so representing the collective memory and experiences of the history of the Chinese people.

Shao Yinong (Qinghai Province, China, b. 1961) graduated from the Qinghai Normal University, and lectures at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Mu Chen (Liaoning Province, China, b.1970) received an MFA from the People’s University of China. The two have exhibited together in a vast list of major international museums like the Pompidou Center in Paris and Arles, the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou, China, the Israel Museum, a solo exhibitions at the Museum of Trastevere in Rome, and a feature exhibition at the Shanghai Biennale in 2004. The two currently live and work in Beijing.
