Noted for his lyrical, gestural abstraction, the work of Sam Francis is typified by bold, highly contrasting paint in overlapping and splattered profusion. With its long, painterly drips and splashes, this acrylic on paper is an exquisite example of the artist's signature style. The work has been approved by the Sam Francis Foundation and has been archived under the number SF88-459.

Dedication on verso: “Sam Francis 1988 for Marty on the occasion of my first eating this food love Sam.”

Sam Francis (1923-1994) was an integral part of the Abstract Expressionist movement best known for his use of vivid colors and paint splattering techniques. Francis earned his BA in 1949 and MA in 1950 from the University of California, Berkeley. He also received an honorary Ph.D from the University in 1968. Francis' work has been included in numerous museum exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum, Pasadena, California; a retrospective at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA.
