Lot description

This loud and colorful print is an excellent example of Francis' ability to create abstract works that take on a life of their own. 'Untitled' has an undeniable sense of movement, almost as if amoeba-like masses are swimming in a sea of blue.

Sam Francis (1923-1994) was an integral part of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Known for his vivid colors and splattered paint effects. This example is quite consistent with his oeuvre, with splashes of color adding to the dynamic tone of the composition. Francis earned his B.A. in 1949 and M.A. in 1950 from the University of California, Berkeley. He also received an honorary PhD from the University in 1968. Francis' work has been included in numerous museum exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum, California, a Retrospective at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
