Eccentric Spanish artist Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) is as known for his artwork today as he was during his time for his personality and grandiose behavior, reflected in his Surrealist artwork. He is most recognized for his paintings, namely ‘The Persistence of Memory’ completed in 1931, but his prolific career also included several ventures in film, sculpture, photography, and collaborative efforts with other established artists. Dalí’s painterly skills are said to have been inspired by the Renaissance masters, while his style was the product of a Surrealist concern for the subconscious. Though the end of the Surrealism movement did not come to a complete halt but rather was replaced by subsequent artistic trends, it is commonly believed that the death of Salvador Dalí coincided with the death of the movement to which he was such a large contributor. Dalí’s works have been exhibited worldwide, most recently in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2012) and Venus Over Manhattan, New York, NY (2012).
