Lot description
Salvador Dalí. "Hommage à Newton" (1980-81). From an edition of 350.
This sculpture is stamped, signed and numbered on sculpture. Bronze with patina. sculpture is on original marble base. This work is in excellent condition. Dimensions of the sculpture itself : 13.8 x 7.9 x 3.9 in. / (35 x 20 x 10 cm). Dalí honours Newton for his discovery of the law of gravity, symbolised by the famed falling apple, represented here by a sphere of metal attached to a line. In this form, the apple loses both its impermanence and its capacity for regeneration. Dali has pierced the figure with two large holes: one which portrays the absence of Newton's vital organs, while the other clearly displays the lack of mind. What remains is only symbolic representation. The artist was so enamoured with this image that when the King of Spain dedicated a large plaza in Madrid to him in May of 1986, Dali created a large monument of Newton for the plaza.

Famed and eccentric Spanish artist Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) is as known for his artwork today as he was during his time for his personality and grandiose behavior, reflected in his Surrealist artwork. Though the end of the Surrealism movement did not come to a complete halt but rather was replaced by subsequent artistic trends, it is commonly believed that the death of Salvador Dalí coincided with the death of the movement to which he was such a large contributor. Dalí’s works have been exhibited worldwide, most recently in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2012) and Venus Over Manhattan, New York, NY (2012). Selected Public Collections:
The Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, IL)
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, NY)
