Lot description
This beautiful lithograph comes from Tamayo's well-known 'Las Mujeres' series.

Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo(1899 - 1991) is well known for his mixographs, a very unique heavy etching technique. The artist’s work is deeply inspired by the Indian legends and traditional stories heard by the artist during his childhood as well as by pre-Columbian art.

A pure Zapotec Indian, Tamayo studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City from 1917 to 1922. After moving to New York in 1937, he was embraced by the art community, and exhibited at both Knoedler Gallery and Marlborough Gallery. Tamayo received international recognition for his paintings at the 1950 Venice. After living in Paris for a decade, the artist returned to Mexico, where he built a museum in his hometown of Oaxaco.
