Lot description
The provenance of this seven color screenprint is superb as it was a gift from Roy Lichtenstein to a close family friend. This is an Artist's Proof that came directly from the artist's personal collection.

Oval Office is one of Lichtenstein's most desirable, impressive and iconic prints. According to the catalogue raisonne, the screenprint was executed in 1992 for the Artists for Freedom of Expression Project: prints and multiple created to benefit the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Citizen Vote, and selected candidates in that year's election. Artists who contributed work to the project were Ida Applebroog, Jennifer Bartlett, Jim Dine, Leon Golub, Red Grooms, Jenny Holzer, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Elizabeth Murray, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, Nancy Spero and William Wegman. The image was also produced on a poster, (of which Lichtenstein only signed 100) and it was reproduced as a campaign button. In creating this magnificent print, Lichtenstein researched the interior of the Oval Office in the White House, Washington, D.C., incorporating some authentic decorative details, including paintings that had once hung there.

When the National Gallery of Art held a retrospective of the prints of Roy Lichtenstein in 1994-5, "Oval Office" was a centerpiece of that exhibition, which the promoters described in the accompanying press releases and publications as as the artist's "landmark" print.

Although Lichtenstein created this monumental print to raise money for the Democratic party and especially the CLINTON-GORE campaign, the theme is patriotic in general, and the image itself appeals to Democrats and Republicans alike. Indeed, editions of the Oval Office have been known to hang in the homes and offices of prominent Republicans as well.....It is, after all, the Oval Office of the White House, which, at this moment in history -- is up for grabs.

This large iconic screenprint is in fine condition and is currently framed. It is numbered 16 of only 25 Artist's Proofs aside from the regular edition of 175. It is fully referenced in the catalogue raisonne of Roy Lichtenstein's prints, with a full page reproduction. (Corlett, 277)
