Lot description
As part of his ‘SCUMAK (Auto Sculpture Maker)’ series from 1998-2001, Roxy Paine wanted to remove the artist’s hand in producing works and mimic the creative process by relegating the task to a computer program. A machine melts plastics together with pigments, creating unique globular forms which were then extruded onto a conveyor belt. With this series, Paine alludes to ideas of man’s manipulation of nature, while also subverting the idea of expected repetitive forms so typically seen from automated machine productions.

Contemporary American artist Roxy Paine (b. 1966) is renowned for his work which investigates man’s need to control and manipulate nature. Known for his unique sculptures which emulate natural phenomena, Paine creates organic looking art made from fabricated materials. Whether its trees made from twisted metal, mushroom fields created from polymers, and even constructing machines that make bulbous sculptures of melted plastic, he continues to pursue an innovative approach to displaying the struggle between the natural and the artificial. In addition to winning the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Scholarship, Paine has exhibited extensively throughout the world with recent exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY), Israel Museum (Jerusalem, Israel), and Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (Montréal, Canada), among others.
