Lot description
Frame Size: 49.5 x 49.5 in.

Roberto Matta (1911-2002) was a Chilean painter and sculptor. Originally trained as an architect, he fled from Europe to New York in 1939. Along with other artists including Max Ernst, Matta played a significant role in the Surrealist presence. He was of influential importance in encouraging Jackson Pollock and several others to expand their techniques to include automatism. This undoubtedly served as the prelude to the revered Abstract Expressionist works of Pollock and the establishment of the groundbreaking movement as a whole, and to the distinctive last phase of Arshile Gorky. Matta himself created many paintings that border on abstraction, although his works all maintain a Surrealist tonality.
