Robert Motherwell was a founding member of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, whose members included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. He was the only one of the original Abstract Expressionists to enthusiastically embrace printmaking early on, collaborating with some of the major printmaking workshops of the era. Robert Motherwell, who was once married to Helen Frankenthaler, is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
