Robert Motherwell (American, 1915-1999) was a leading Abstract Expressionist artist. His work as an abstract painter and printmaker was influenced, not only by the expressive strategies of action painting and Color Field painting, but by the Surrealists’ use of automatism and the cubist approach to collage. Motherwell is best known for his “Elegy to the Spanish Republic” series, which he began painting in the late 1940s and would continue to develop for the rest of his career. After studying literature and philosophy at Stanford and Harvard, he had his first solo show in Paris in 1939. He then began studying art history at Columbia under prominent art critic Meyer Schapiro, who encouraged him in his ambition to paint. From the mid-1940s onward, he was also a leading spokesman for abstract art in America, lecturing and writing widely on the subject as well as editing the Documents of Modern Art series of books. His wide circle of friends and contemporaries included Willem de Kooning, Hans Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko. During his lifetime, Motherwell was the subject of major retrospective exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1965) and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo (1983) and had solo exhibitions at the Royal Academy, London, England and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, among others.
