Lot description
"Tillman", Longo's print of a business woman from his revered "Men in the Cities" series stands life size at 6ft. tall. The intense physical depiction of the subject's body gives depth and passion to the figure.

The "Men in the Cities" series, illustrates sharply dressed businessmen and women writhing in contorted emotion. The artists work from the "Men in Cities" series is also prominently displayed in the apartment of fictional character Patrick Bateman in the film of American Psycho.

The piece is hand-signed and numbered in pencil by the artist from the very small edition of only 50 being printed on Arches paper. The work is framed in a contemporary matte black gessoed frame, recessed and floating on oyster linen matting measuring: 75 3/4 x 45 3/4 inches (192.4 x 116.2 cm). All framing materials used are of archival quality and are 100% acid free including U.V. protective plexi-glas.

Born and raised in New York, Robert Longo (b.1953) had a fascination with mass media, which would continue to influence his art. Known for meticulously rendered large scale drawings and sculptures, Longo gained notoriety in 1981 with his first solo exhibition of his "Men in the Cities" series at Metro Pictures, New York, which illustrated businessmen (and women) in fluid and distorted movements intersected by architectural forms. He would photograph friends caught in various dance moves, being pulled by ropes, or being hit with baseballs to capture the body in contorted poses, exploring spasmodic movements found in the punk scene. Longo would then painstakingly render them into charcoal drawings, a favored medium of the artist. Longo earned his BFA in 1975 from the State University College, Buffalo, NY. He was one of the original founders (along with Diane Bertolo, Charles Clough, Nancy Dwyer, Cindy Sherman, and Michael Zwack) of the highly influential Hallwalls. Ever a diversified artist, Longo is also a co-founder and member of the band X PATSYS (with Barbara Sukowa, Jon Kessler, Anthony Coleman, Anton Fier and Sean Conly). Longo is represented by Metro Pictures in New York City and Galerie Hans Mayer in Düsseldorf, Germany. He is also included in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others.
