Lot description
Commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art as a Christmas card in 1965, (an upside down Christmas tree is visible in the letter "V"), Robert Indiana’s original LOVE image has become one of the most widely recognized Pop icons in history. During the 1960’s it became one of the nation’s most popular anti-war symbols. In 1973 the LOVE print was chosen as a U.S. postage stamp. With over 300 million stamps issued, it is likely the most widely distributed Pop images in history.
Each print in "The Garden of Love" series utilizes a unique color combination, setting the series apart from his previous LOVE impressions. The portfolio includes Tulip, Lily, Zinnia, Rose, Phlox, and Lilac.
One of the most widely recognized and respected American artists today, Robert Indiana (born September 13 , 1928) has been a pioneer of pop art as well as assemblage art and hard-edge abstraction. For more than fifty years, Indiana has been preoccupied with Americana, signage, the power of language and the abstraction of ordinary words. Indiana gained international recognition in the early 1960s after almost a decade of working in New York City. His early pop-inspired work gained international attention due to its social and political overtones, particularly when his LOVE print became the emblem of 1960’s idealism. Uniquely employing the vernacular of contemporary Americana combined with a sophisticated formal and conceptual approach, Robert Indiana established his role as a major figure in pop art as well as a contemporary icon for an entire generation.
