Riyas Komu is one of the most famous multi-media Contemporary Indian artists working today, whose photography has been the subject of select Museum and Gallery exhibitions, world-wide. These two stunning photographs are from his seminal "Karachi Series". Depicting two old buses, driving away from Karachi, in exodus from the strife-ridden city, laden down with local Pakistani villagers and their possessions, on a dusty road to no-where. The Karachi Series consists in total of 14 black and white photographs that Riyas Komu shot during his artist residency in Karachi, Pakistan. The Series portrays in an unflinching manner the daily lives of the resident of this region, including the exodus of the living, as ell as the tombs and burial grounds within this conflict-centric city in Pakistan. In these photographs both the living and the dead narrate the tale of a seemingly ‘cursed’ society which is often considered the epicenter of international terrorism.

Describing his work as "Neo-Realism", Komu's work tends to focus on the common man’s plight and struggle through life in a modern day society. Komu’s formal knowledge of art and its history, combined with his reflection on his own personal history, results in an intriguing mix of symbolism and complex, emotive detail with the power to engage his viewers. Born in Kerala, India in 1971, Riyas Komu graduated from the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai in 1999. Not long after graduating, Komu garnered attention and praise from a global audience for work he was invited to contribute to the 2007 Venice Biennale. Currently living and working in Mumbai, the artist has held Museum and Gallery shows the world over including the elite Aicon Gallery, NY, Grovsenor Gallery, UK and National Gallery of Modern Art (Mumbai, India).
