"New York City" (2006) is a stunning color photograph triptych by acclaimed Contemporary Indian artist Riyas Komu. A dynamic example of his color photography, this triptych work documents his time spent in New York and offers three different, yet inherently connected visual experiences that encapsulate the sights, sounds, experiences and emotions that Komu experienced while spending time in the city. The first and third images are interiors of a formally dressed waiter setting a log table in a posh, red dining room. The first image is blurred and suggests movement, referencing the hectic, non-stop pace of New York. The third image is of the same waiter, yet is poised and captures the level of wealth and perfection expected in this context. The visually arresting photograph in between these two is an exterior image of the snippet of bright blue sky captured between the city's canyons of skyscrapers. The photograph is powerful in its silent intensity and its intentional difference from the interior images. This rare Series is custom framed in three parts and is the final edition of this triptych, allowing the series to be installed horizontally, vertically or individually, as desired.

Komu's art often has political undertones and often addresses the extreme and simultaneous growth of both wealth and poverty in India. The extension of this sentiment in this triptych to New York City makes this work a rare and exciting example of the artist's imagery and work outside of his native India. Komu’s formal knowledge of art and its history, combined with his reflection on his own personal history, results in an intriguing mix of symbolism and complex, emotive detail with the power to entrance viewers.

Born in Kerala, India in 1971, Riyas Komu graduated from the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai in 1999. Not long after graduating, Komu garnered attention and praise from a European audience for work he contributed to the Venice Biennial in 2007. Riyas Komu is internationally acclaimed for his large-scale realist oil paintings, but also critically renowned for his work with photography, video and sculpture. Komu currently lives and works in Mumbai, India.
