Lot description
Riva Helfond (b. 1910 in Brooklyn, NY) is an American painter, graphic designer, educator, lithographer and serigraph artist. She studied at the School of Industrial art and Art Students League in New York City, and became one of the innovators in silkscreen serigraphs and screenprints. Her works often represent stark imagery of the Great Depression years, along with abstract forms inspired by her travels to Europe later on in her career. Helfond has taught printmaking at New York University and is currently a professor at Union College. Her works have been purchased by a countless number of private collectors and museums, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She was most recently awarded with the Society of American Graphic Artists Award for Outstanding Collograph and Monotype (1986; 1991).
