Lot description
"Untitled (De Kooning)" combines the push-pull allure of pulp fiction and soft porn for which Richard Prince has become famous. He uses the influence of Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning and overlays it with a sexy, bent-over pinup. This work consists of collage, offset lithography, hand cutting, hand drawing, and assemblage on 14 x 14 inset board. The work is hand signed and lettered in pencil lower center by the artist from the edition of 26, lettered A-Z.

Richard Prince was born in 1949 in the Panama Canal Zone currently living and working in upstate New York. A painter and photographer, mining images from mass media, advertising and entertainment since the late seventies, Prince has redefined the concepts of authorship, and ownership. Using his understanding of the complex transactions of representation to the making of art, he evolved a unique signature that is unquestionably his own. An avid collector and perceptive chronicler of American subcultures and vernaculars and their role in the construction of American identity, he has probed the depths of racism, sexism, and psychosis in mainstream humor; the mythical status of cowboys, bikers, customized cars, and celebrities; and most recently, the symbolix sexy nurse from pulp fiction and dvd titles blazoned atop of black and white soft porn photographs (2011).
