Lot description
A master of appropriation and a chronicler of mass culture, Prince combines both in this signature joke painting. By juxtaposing the deceptively simplistic renderings of happy children and peace signs with the cynical, time worn mother-in-law joke, he exaggerates the sentiments of both.

As Ben Lewis wrote in the Evening Standard when reviewing the Serpentine show, “The joke paintings are an intellectually hypnotic combination of opposites which hold one's mind like a piece of metal suspended between two magnets.”

Richard Prince, born in 1949 in the Panama Canal Zone, lives and works in Upstate New York. He has been honored with numerous one-person museum shows most recently at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and previously at the Whitney Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum fur Gegenwartskunst in Basel, and the Whitechapel Gallery in London.
